I’ve been on the Internet forever but I’ve mostly neglected social media until recently. I still struggle with them but I’m persisting and even starting to like them. I love the community, the conversation, the interaction, and feedback.
I love that you can finish a painting, it’ll still be wet, and in an instant you can share it with thousands of people. If a work isn’t quite right and you need some help, people will happily give their opinion and suggestions on it. Be prepared though as people have less of a filter online, so opinions can seem harsh if you’re a sensitive little butterfly.
Overall though, social media is a great thing for artists. So many artists now use social media to have very successful careers outside of the traditional gallery system. Artists can bypass galleries altogether and still do well financially. Some have followings of hundreds of thousands and sell new works minutes after posting them.
Enough chit chat though, here’s my social media accounts.
- Youtube – I’ve recently started to learn how to make videos. At the moment I have a few painting demonstrations up but I’ll probably do more art related videos as my video making skills grow. Subscribe here.
- Instagram – I still don’t like how Instagram is so cell / mobile phone focused but I’m slowly warming to it. It’s good for snapshots and progress pictures. Follow here.
- Twitter – I feel like my posts get lost in Twitter, but I still post there when I have something to share. Follow here.
- Facebook – I stopped using Facebook for a long time but am now using it again. I just don’t look at my news feed too much as it’s filled with drama and fear rather than art and creativity. I’ll post a couple of times per week. Become a friend here.
If you have an art related account and follow me I’ll probably follow you back. Let me know if you’re following me and I’m not following you back as I do miss some from time to time.
I also go missing occasionally. I’m not a people person. Sometimes I need to run to my cave and be with the shadows.
What are your favourite social media platforms and how do you use them as an artist or art lover? Let me know.
