Fourth day of my 30 days of ball point pen drawings and I’ve turned to my New Balance joggers. I think conservatively, I have probably walked 500 kms in these shoes. I walk almost everyday for about 70 minutes, plus I also wear them when I’m out and know that I’ll be walking a lot. They are definitely starting to show their age though.
I’ve bought sneakers worth double and triple what I paid for these New Balance shoes and they disintegrated within months. I bought an expensive pair of Asics joggers and they lasted about 6 months. Then I bought an even more expensive pair of Nike air joggers and they lasted about 3 months. I tried contacting Nike about replacing them but never heard back from them.. and of course I’ll never buy another pair of Nike shoes again, ever!
I’m not sure what shoes I’ll buy next but I’ll have to start thinking about it soon as the tread is wearing out on my New Balance shoes. I’ve had these for more than 18 months now, probably closer to two years. I use mine a lot now that I have made exercise an everyday thing, so if I can get 12 months out of a pair of exercise shoes then I’m pretty happy.
Ink Pen Drawing 4: Day 4 of 30

Today I wanted to loosen up a bit and draw something that I touch everyday. It’s funny that we can use a thing everyday but not really look at it. Drawing forces you to pause and look and see what is really there.
I stuck with pen lines and avoided any kind of shading. So it’s a relatively quick drawing but it took a lot of looking. Rather than drawing what you think a pair of shoes looks like you actually look and then respond. We forget to look and we draw what we think is there rather than what is actually there. So even though the New Balance shoes are drawn very loosely they’re an accurate representation of what was before me, not identical and refined but definitely more rugged than they actually are.
It was fun to draw. I’m probably more friendly with lines than I am shading as I feel more free, more me. I think I’m happy with the end result too. It’s always hard to tell if you really like something or not until you’ve lived with it a while though.
Anyway, I’m rambling now. Have a look at my previous pen and ink drawings here. Follow me on Instagram too if you’re interested in what I’m up to.
